Hello or Hola?
Argument:
Between Garcia's "Theorizing Translanguaging for educators", and Rodriguez "Aria" chapter you can see strong similarities.
Richard Rodriguez, a bilingual man who has lived through an education system "What I needed to learn in school was that I had the right and the obligation-to speak the public language of los gringos", that was his reality. He had to reform himself to match the school. Rodriquez explains how easily he could have attended a school that became bilingual, which is true! Later in life we are forced to complete a second- language requirement to graduate high school, to pass middle school, and to graduate college. He tells the reader about his reality, of changing to be a regular Richard at home speaking the language his family felt comfortable with, and then to a language his classmates and more importantly his school staff felt comfortable with.
Ofelia Garcia , a women wrote an excerpt that focuses on how effect Translanguaging can be for a bilingual classroom. The main point is translanguaging can work hand in hand with bilingual teachings. In a bilingual home, you will hear multiple people use english and their second language without knowing they are doing so. "Translanguaging afford the opportunity to use the home language practices, different as they may be from those in school, to practice the language of school, and thus to eventually use the appropriate from of language" (Garcia), she explains we need to have a reconnect through both languages and have source of practice.
".. they do not realize that while one suffers a diminished sense of private individuality by becoming assimilated into public society, such assimilation makes possible the achievement of public individuality" (Rodriguez 39)
AND
"..translanguaging posits that bilinguals have one linguistic repertoire from which they select features strategically to communicate effectively" (Garcia)
Both of these quotes connect to the image above. The quote by Rodriguez I believe stood to make a stand we have to make a choice to be apart of the public or to stay in as private individual. As for Garcia, she explains if we use translanguaing in a proper fair form, we would succeed in finding a proper way to communicate in society.

I really enjoyed reading your blog! I think that your title did a good job of grabbing my attention and I thought all of the points that you made were very interesting! I also really liked the picture that you used and felt like it was really relevant to what you were writing about!
ReplyDeleteHon Supriya, I really enjoyed your blog because you showed how important being bilingual is by explaining that these kids have the opportunity to speak multiple languages whether they are not at home or at home.
ReplyDeleteHonestly the more the better my family uses both Arabic and English in a sort of flowy way. It's not forced and it helps everyone understand it too. Classrooms that keep this open minded communication have the opportunity to teach and be taught.
