What are values to you?
Values are different to each and every student, yet school systems hold students accountable for having a "normal" set of standards. At Esek Hopkins, like most schools focus on the being positive and acting on kindness. Those are values the school thinks students should be held accountable for, but the true values of the school vary. Students value fighting, care to punish those who have wronged them, and retaliation. The school is not proud of the majority cared values, but this is the reality. Teachers and staff members mistrust/ mistreat students and vice versa.
Patrick Finn said, "Teachers expect students to possess the assumptions, values, and behaviors associated with school discourse, and they blame them when they do not". There was a troubled/ troublesome boy within the school creating issues with a girl ( his former girlfriend) threatening her verbally and physically abusing her. The school didn't know about the latter, but had expelled him for his behavior and never showing remorse or change. The boy ended up at a school down the street, not even 1000 feet away. Not too sure how the incident began but it ended with the ex-girlfriend being assaulted. Every student I had spoken to the following school day once I had been told about the incident occurring had been in the worst mood: angry, upset, rebellious, revengeful, hurt. The students told me one-by-one they each wanted to punch the former student and wanted him to pay for his actions. While rightfully so, the school stayed behind its core values, but didn't speak to the student body and address how they should move forward.
