Journal 4

I have been spending 4-6 hours at East Lake Hopkins middle school every Friday since February. This is an awesome opportunity to learn everything that happens in a classroom. As of right now in my youth pride club I see a lot of students miss treating and miss using the system. They believe one teacher and Solely that teacher. This week we did a activity, a fishbowl activity. Where I wrote up on little pieces of paper questions about gender, sex, discrimination, racism, and inequality quality. By introducing a talking stick, to get the club on the same point and not talking over each other, I realize that I didn’t have it in me to take control of this club. I had to have multiple conversations every Friday about how I am equal to them. No one in that room was above anyone else. No one had the right to boss or mystery anyone. Many girls did not completely agree with me, they try to take control or attention and do their lesson. The Talkingstick didn’t necessarily help but after yelling I got attention. In the fishbowl activity I asked “if you were to change something about yourself what would that be and why. Many students screamed out I would be white for the privilege, i would be straight for the respect, I would be Dominican for the food. These are all answers I was eager to know more about. One student brought up wishing they were included in all means of school. This one student believed that she was not being given the same opportunities as the straight students, because she was gay and she loves drama. Student only Felt they could speak their minds in our club. The Student started expressing the lack of connection when it came to every day school. She started explaining that we have Miss carina, but Miss Carina is not here every single day.
